  1. This puzzle uses a chopped up chess board to illustrate the famous four color conjecture.

  3. When cartographers began making maps they soon discovered that never were more than four colors required to color a map in such a way that no two regions that shared a common border would have the same color.  But the mathematical proof of this discovery has proved quite elusive.

  5. (If you solved this puzzle without realizing that it was colored so that no adjacent pieces had the same color, or you did it on a black and white machine, then congratulations that was quite a feat.)
